Frequently Asked Questions
What are the rules? Rules are posted here.
How old do I have to be to race? 9 years old and up can race.
My bike is old and it was not very expensive, can I still use it to race? Yes you can. You don't need to spend thousands of dollars on a bike to race. Obviously a lighter bike will be easier to pedal but it's the rider who makes the speed - not the bike.
Do I need Clipless pedals (pedals that clip to your shoe)? No - flat pedals will do just fine. It's just a matter of preference for those who use them.
What is a pre-ride? Every Tuesday night prior to a Thursday race we do a pre-ride of the course. Since the course is always changing every race it's important to pre-ride. The ride is lead by one of the race organizers at a medium pace for one lap so that riders of all levels can keep up and learn the course. After one lap riders usually do more at a faster pace.
Will I get lost on the course? The course will be well marked on race day using painted arrows on the ground, small signs, chalk and yellow tape.
I need to lose some weight or get into better shape before I try something like this - Come on out and try it, you will love it and you will lose weight and gain strength quickly. Some people race just to get into better shape.
Is it dangerous? No, you can race at your own pace and become faster as you gain experience. The more experienced riders are courteous and warn you before they pass.
Do I have to pay the $150 fee all at once? No, you can make payments.
What else do I need to race? If you are doing the whole series you will need an Ontario Cycling Association Citizens Racing Permit. A permit costs $40 and they will be available at the race.
How many laps do I have to do? Beginner does 1 lap, Novice 2, Sport 3, Expert 4, Elite 5. Lap distance will vary from race to race anywhere from 5 kms to 9kms.
